There is a lot of debate about the optimal time to do cardio, as well as what you should and shouldn’t eat beforehand. I just read this short article and wanted to share. I personally prefer to get my cardio out of the way in the morning, so I usually do low intensity on an empty stomach. =)
“Running On Empty? Research confirms doing cardio in the morning on an empty stomach is the best combination for fat burning
That’s the big question regarding your morning cardio. Fortunately, science has your back. A recent study examined the effects of meal timing on the amount of fat and carbohydrates burned during not only exercise but also the two hours following the workout. The researchers split subjects into two groups — one that abstained from eating before cardio and one that ate preworkout — and found that the fasting group burned significantly more fat than the satiated group. This reaffirms the common belief that doing cardio in the morning on an empty stomach is the best combination for fat-burning.
Yet if you just can’t go without eating before you train, there’s hope. The group that ate before doing cardio burned significantly more fat two hours after the exercise session; although the fasting group was the more efficient overall fat-burner.
Take-Home Tip: If you can do your cardio on an empty stomach, you’ll get a fat-burning edge. Otherwise, you’ll still burn fat, just not as efficiently.”
